On With Your Life!Bulimia
Is
a common eating disorder, and we help people to stop!
The usual way bulimia manifests itself in thought, feeling and behaviour
is by a cycle of bingeing and purging (or just eating and purging). The cycles
of bulimia are driven by feelings of fear and/or low self-image.
Anything
you repeat often enough will become a habit or 'automated' by the unconscious
mind, so the bulimia seems to happen all by itself, seemingly just out of
conscious control. Basically, bulimia becomes a habit you can't control. This in
turn often leads to feelings of depression/self loathing/anger and feelings of
failure and anti depressants.
Talking
about the past to understand how the bulimia started is necessary for us to
understand where it stemmed from. Bulimia is a behaviour that is run by the unconscious
mind, on auto! And can be triggered
by many different things. Peer pressure, something someone said, did, or
something they felt.
We
work directly with the bulimia patterns, literally teaching you HOW to re
programme and think differently, to help you to build flexibility and choice
into your thoughts, feelings and behaviors in the NOW, building self confidence
and putting you in the driving seat instead of the behaviour.
What
everyone with bulimia has in common is 'programming'. Some wake up in the
morning and their programme tells them what they are going to eat and when
and where they will purge. Others programs wake up and say 'today will
be a good day' and start the day with the best of intentions. Then they will
start breakfast/lunch/dinner and get to a point where they think, 'I have eaten
this much, I may as well keep eating, I can always throw up afterwards'.
Think
of either of these thought patterns as 'negative programs'. It's not as if you
do this deliberately, if you really had a conscious choice you would feel good
and eat a healthy balanced diet. However, when your unconscious mind is
programmed to do something else instead of running the bulimia program, the
bulimia will stop. It really is that simple.
As
mentioned earlier bulimia is usually driven by fear that if the person
doesn't binge then they will put on weight. Also we have found, some people find
that it’s a way to eat loads of the foods that taste good, but that are
associated with putting weight on therefore are never eaten accept when bingeing. Unfortunately the
activity of being bulimic often actually works against the body becoming slim,
healthy and fit, For example, someone with bulimia and worried about their
weight will often eat breakfast and not eat again until they binge at night. Or
they skip breakfast and starve themselves all day. If they were to eat something
like porridge, or natural yogurt with a banana and honey then their
metabolic rate would increase and they would more effectively burn calories, and
foods like porridge, honey and yogurt provide a long-term energy release so
that the person isn't 'starving' by lunchtime. Almost invariably when the person
stops being bulimic and starts to eat a healthy balanced diet and exercise plan
they find it astonishingly easy to maintain a healthy weight.
Some
bulimics know more about nutrition than many nutritionists, yet others associate
food with being fat and putting weight on.
On the very rare occasion when the person is ignorant of the basic facts
of what constitutes a healthy diet then we provide the basic information and ask
them to see a nutritionist for specific help and advice after they have seen us.
